Fun for Less
Discounts to Help You Save

Money Matters

10562963_mThere are a lot of retailers that offer discounts to those over the age of 55 (some even lower). The trick, however, is that most of these companies require that you ask for the discount. While it’s never a bad idea to ask any restaurant, clothing store, or entertainment venue if they offer a lowered rate, here’s a list to help you know where you can save now.

FOOD

Several grocery chains offer discounts for guests over a particular age. The discounts vary by day, offering, and participating locations – for example, one location may give those over 65 10% on the first Wednesday of the month, while another may give 5% off to everyone over 50 on Mondays, and yet others may offer no discount at all – so be sure to reach out to your local grocer to discover the best time to shop.

Grocery stores aren’t the only places to grab some food while pinching pennies. Many establishments, from fast food to fine dining, also offer discounts. The next time you step out to eat, be sure to ask your server if they have any discounts you can take advantage of.

TRAVEL

If you’re planning a vacation, you may be able to save a great deal. Some train companies offer fare discounts for those 62 years or older. If you prefer to rent a car, several rental agencies have special pricings as well. Planes, unlike trains and automobiles, are a bit trickier. While some airlines do offer discounts, it’s important to compare pricing as, under some circumstances, “discounted” fares may be more expensive than regular fares. As always, evaluate your options before making a decision. Once you get to where you’re going, some hotel chains have varying rates and retiree discounts depending on your age.

There are a variety of entertainment options available to you that proudly advertise their Boomer-friendly pricing. If you’d like to see the latest and greatest in cinema, many theaters offer discounted pricing for those over 60. If you’re seeking something more hands-on, several theme parks often provide cheaper passes to those 65 or over. Discounts on books, shows, concerts, music and sports are among the variety of venues that also feature boomer discounts. When you figure out what it is you’d like to do, you can start with sites like AARP that offer various deals to members.

Happy discount-hunting everyone!
